RE: Fire aboard the USS Forrestal

Gary & All,

After this fire & others the Navy started Flight Deck Fir Fighting schools on both coasts. The School at NAS North Island San Diego ran for several years [68-72] & every flight deck person assigned to a carrier had to complete this school before deployment.

Fire aboard the USS Forrestal

On July 29, 1967, the USS Forrestal (CV-59) had a devastating fire and series of chain-reaction explosions after an electrical anomaly discharged a Zuni rocket on the flight deck. The aftermath of the tragedy resulted in damage exceeding $72 million, with 134 crewmen dead and 161 more injured.
