RE: Here's some of mine.

Geno, what is a plank owner.  I was there from march of 58 until dec. of 58 and back a few times :tad: for a few months. they havent started flying the barrier the first few months i was there.  i made ad3 when i was there and worked in power plants on midway.. at bp they new i could type so they put me in flight planning for 3 months and then i went to the tool crib passing out tools and ording parts and loging them in the plane log of parts. from there i went to engine build up and later to the line until discharge..left bp in late august of 60. take care.

I have Paul's Plank Owner's Certificate here ready to hang (someday).  His is from the NavFac  It's a cherished possession.  Where in Massachusettes did your dad live, Tom?  I used to live in CT, but now live in land-locked AZ.

I have a certificate very much like that one somewhere.I picked it up at a yardsale for 5 bucks because I liked the image so much.
I couldn't help but wonder why the owner (or maybe his family) would want to part with it.

Tom I dont remember your dad, of course it was 50 years ago!!   While at Barbers Point I worked in Maint. Admin. and Logs and Records.  Back then they didnt have the AZ rating and mechs and metalsmiths were put in the offices if they knew how to type and file.  On Midway I work in the metal shop doing daily maint. inspections on the willy victors the whole nine months I was there on the second shift.  Have you ever visited www.willyvictor.com ?  Be sure you do its very interesting.

If anyone remembers these, let me know. I had a better original version of the base patch on my windbreaker. But, it has long since disappeared. I ordered this one from a site online. But the Public Works is original and I have had it all this time in my trunk.

Hope I'm successful.
Using Thom's photo's
The first is the same PR A-3's that gave us all the grief with that chain arresting gear while I was at Midway.

The second is the area where most of Checkpool 16 & the fire truck remains ended up as I remember it.

Gary,
I recall those things as being hard to steer & there was no steady acceleration. I saw some nerdy EM look to be riding a bucking bronk!!
They had an outbreak of fires on them in the mid 80's. Saw a EM kill himself on one as he ran the unit into the Engine Nucel of an S-3 rounding the nose after a start just never straightened the thing out just went in a giant arc.

Those of us in ramp service used power units all the time on the Connie's, for their preflights and till they got their first engine started, but ours weren't self powered, we plugged in a long line to a power island on the ramp and then 3 lines to the belly of the plane, maybe they were for converting AC to DC power, I think the power islands may have been taken out after AEW left so you didn't see them when you were there.

The NC-8's were both AC and DC. They had a diesel engine that powered the compound generator. The mobility of the unit was done by using a DC traction motor that turned the real wheels, much like a locomotive.

The Navy was using electric Hybrids long before the automobile industry. LOL

Thanks for posting those Thom.

I became quite familiar with this piece of machinery. This NC-8 belonged to me for two years. We had two of them actually. I was the only ASE on the island and the only one that was trained to work on the electrical systems of these.

This is a mobile electric power plant. It's the same as the island power plant that created the electricity for the whole island, but smaller. It was plugged into the aircraft when they were parked so that they could use the electrical systems without running the planes engines or the APU.

As much as I'd like to see the Island once again I'm afraid that it would brake my heart. From 10 or 15 years ago when I was communicating with the MPC people till now, only seem's to have gotten worse. It don't seem that they do much to maintain anything. Maybe Obama sould throw a few billion out that way, to fix it up as a nice place once again.

Ya'll take care and stay well,

Joe.
When they get money, they spend it on everything BUT the island that we love. It's not a problem of not having enough money, but rather it's a matter of spending it wisely.
